In 2017, Joseph Barnes Phillips bought his production Big Foot by HighRise Theatre to Theatre Royal as a part of the Black Theatre Live tour. Big Foot sees a collision between the euphoric highs of Rayleigh’s teenage life in South London and a mum’s terminal illness.
Working with Ipswich and Suffolk Council for Racial Equality, Joseph Barnes Phillips developed and delivered workshops with young people in Suffolk at risk of offending and male residents at High Point prison to develop a dialogue between the two groups, informing a new play titled Pup. This new play was performed at Theatre Royal to an audience of young people and sector staff including; police, social workers, community and youth workers from across Suffolk. Pup explored the relationship between two men and how the younger can learn from the mistakes of the elder -exploring the importance of father figures and role modelling.
