Participants from the YMCA in Bury St Edmunds have been involved with photography, writing and film making projects led by Lucinda Meredith, Linzi Stivey and Danusia Iwaszko.
Through a series of outreach workshops, the group made short films around the themes “Diary of a Bury Girl or Boy” inspired by Ambreen Razia’s Diary of A Hounslow Girl, which toured to Theatre Royal as part of The Black Theatre Live programme in 2016. Participants created a series of documentaries, animations and photographs inspired by their lives in Bury. These were shown at Theatre Royal during Ambreen’s visit in 2016 and later at the YMCA annual conference where some participants spoke of their experience to the wider YMCA community.
Alongside this creative opportunity, participants experienced working in a cultural venue taking up work placement opportunities – working alongside experienced Front of House staff to gain valuable skills. The theatre’s relationship with some participants was able to be extended through progression into the Theatre Royal Youth Company and Community Company where some participants went on to work technical theatre to build their CV’s before applying to university and as performers in our Summer Production.
