Doorstep Multi-Sensory Theatre with EACH

Posted on: 10th July, 2025

Our fantastic Doorstep Theatre Festival visited families supported by East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) who enjoyed a vibrant, multi-sensory theatre performance, performed by Moonbeam Theatre in Ixworth. The event welcomed families from EACH’s three hospices: The Treehouse in Ipswich, The Nook near Norwich, and Milton near Cambridge.

EACH said that the highlight of the day was a performance of Once Upon a Flower Bed by Moonbeam Theatre, as part of our Doorstep Theatre Festival. Designed especially for young people with Special Educational Needs (SEN) and Profound and Multiple Learning Disabilities (PMLD), the show offered a unique, immersive experience filled with colour, sound, and movement.

“We were thrilled to be part of this special day, giving young people and their families the experience of high-quality, live theatre on their doorstep,” said David Whitney, Head of Creative Learning at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds. “Our Doorstep Theatre Festival project is the perfect way to achieve this, allowing us to work directly with children with SEN and PMLD in a meaningful and accessible way.”

Moonbeam Theatre specialises in creating innovative and inclusive performances that encourage exploration, interaction, and joy. Their mission is to redefine the theatre experience for audiences who are often underrepresented in traditional settings, offering shows that are playful, participatory, and welcoming.

Kelly Evans, Groups and Events Coordinator at EACH’s Treehouse hospice, shared her appreciation for the event: “It was a truly lovely and interactive experience, and we’re incredibly grateful to the theatre team. The families had a fantastic time, and the feedback has been heartwarming.”

One parent described the performance as “absolutely amazing,” noting it was the first time her son had engaged with theatre in such a focused and joyful way. “She felt emotional watching him so captivated,” said Kelly. “She told us how much she values the events we offer and is already looking forward to the next one.”

Our Doorstep Theatre Festival makes high-quality arts activities accessible to schools and young people’s groups by lessening the restraints of rural isolation and the financial implications that come with visiting an arts venue. We were delighted to eb able to support families aligned with EACH by enabling them to enjoy live theatre together.
