Our Young People’s Producer, Emma Thorpe, is representing East Anglia as part of the new steering group Youth Theatre Together.
Youth Theatre Together is a movement to connect, support and advocate for youth theatre in England. They aim to drive a new strategy, with young people at its heart, for youth theatre across England.
“I’m really proud to be appointed as the East Anglian representative and being the voice of the young people that I work with at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds. Their voices had fed directly into this work, providing insight into what they want from their youth theatre. I’m really excited for the future of youth theatre and honoured to be selected to be a small part of this wonderful journey.” – Emma Thorpe, Young People’s Producer at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds and East Anglian Representative at Youth Theatre Together.
On the back of the Youth Theatre Census 2024, it found that over 100,000 young people are supported by a youth theatre, along with 4,000 permanent and freelance staff. It also discovered that youth theatres are underfunded and under-resourced and need to be more accessible across England. Read the summary report here. This new steering group will create and implement a plan to help change this for generations to come.
So far, Youth Theatre Together has:
Delivered a national survey of more than 415 youth theatres across England, helping to map the sector in the first time in more than a decade.
Published a full independent research report on learning from the survey, and a summary report identifying our key priorities. Read the summary report.
Gathered 150 youth theatre leaders, participants, trustees and others in Manchester for a two-day creative exploration of the future of youth theatre, generating six key priorities for the sector. Find out more about the event and our six priorities.
Created a steering group representing youth theatres of all shapes and sizes, from every region of England, to create an outline business plan that builds on the six priorities identified in Manchester.
