SUMMER SCHOOL: Musical Theatre Intensive
Monday 3rd August
If your child loves singing along to show tunes, performing for family members in the living room, or simply wants to try something creative and exciting this summer, our Musical Theatre Intensive is an immersive week of acting, singing, dancing, teamwork and performance.
Over five action-packed days, participants work together to rehearse, refine and perform a polished musical theatre showcase for family and friends, working with a team of professional artists: Choreographer, Director and Musical Director, led by the fantastic Grace Wellfare. Grace is a BA PGCE-qualified actor, educator, and theatre director, who has built a diverse career across stage and screen, including award-winning work, over 100 performances with Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds, and collaborations with Warner Brothers.
Throughout the week, your young performers will explore songs, scenes and choreography from a variety of popular and recognisable musical theatre shows. This means they’ll experience different styles, characters and performance challenges while discovering new favourites alongside familiar classics.
Step into the spotlight for an unforgettable week of musical theatre magic!
What happens during the week?
Monday: Discover and Explore
The week begins with games, workshops and ensemble activities designed to help everyone feel comfortable and confident. Participants are introduced to the music, scenes and choreography they’ll be working on and begin learning material together.
Tuesday: Building Skills
Young performers dive deeper into acting techniques, vocal performance, movement and stage presence. They’ll begin developing characters, refining scenes and learning group numbers.
Wednesday: Rehearse and Refine
The focus shifts to polishing performances. Participants work on expression, storytelling, vocal confidence, timing and performance quality while continuing to build their showcase pieces.
Thursday: Putting It All Together
By now the showcase starts to take shape. Transitions are rehearsed, staging is refined and participants gain valuable experience performing in front of one another and receiving supportive feedback.
Friday: Performance Day
The final day culminates in a showcase performance where participants share everything they’ve learned with family and friends.
FAQS
Do participants audition?
There are no high-pressure auditions. Facilitators will get to know each participant’s strengths and confidence levels throughout the week and ensure everyone has meaningful opportunities to shine. Some sections may involve small featured moments, solos, or speaking parts, but the focus remains on ensemble work and creating a positive experience for everyone.
Will they need to learn lines?
Participants may learn short scenes, dialogue, lyrics and performance cues, but everything is taught and rehearsed during the week. No advance preparation is required.
What about costumes?
Simple costume elements and performance pieces may be incorporated to help bring the showcase to life. The emphasis is on creating a professional-looking performance while keeping the process fun and accessible. We will require people on the performance day to wear all-black.
Family Showcase
Parents, carers, grandparents, siblings and friends are invited to celebrate the week’s achievements at the final showcase. It is often the highlight of the week: seeing just how much confidence, skill, and creativity can develop in only five days.
