Act Your Age is Theatre Royal Bury St Edmund’s theatre group for over 55’s who have a love of the theatre.  Each term there are opportunities to work with a team of theatre professionals to experience the enjoyment of professionally led workshops. This group allows you to be creative all while making lasting friendships.

Act Your Age is a regular group and we work on a new theme each term. We are always on the lookout for new members to come and join us.

Starting 25th January, running every Tuesday evening for 11 weeks, 10 sessions (No session on 22nd February) from 1.30pm to 3pm.

We aim to deliver these sessions in-person, however in the ever-changing picture of COVID-19 a digital offer will be provided if we are unable to meet.

No previous theatre experience necessary.

Improvisation is one of the building blocks of drama. It is a core subject when you are learning about drama at school and it features largely in the rehearsal process.

How do you start? How do you move from basic ‘trust’ exercises to explorations of character, emotion and atmosphere? How do you then build these into scenarios that are inherently true to life?

People are often scared of improvisation because they feel they have to be funny or that they have to ‘make something happen’. But although a certain amount of nerves and danger is always present in any rehearsal or performance, being afraid can be a real block to the imagination. The most important thing in learning how to improvise is to get rid of that fear and allow creative instinct to shine.

What can I expect?

  • You will be taken, step by step, session by session through a graded series of improvisation exercises
  • You will learn tools in order to have a full vocabulary of improvisational techniques and get rid of inhibition.
  • As the term progresses, you will develop a greater confidence and creativity, this will give space for more observation and lead to analytical discussion.
  • By the end of the term, you will create a fully improvised scene that’s rooted in truth, character and objective.

Cost £35 for 10 session.  Bursary places available please contact engagement@theatreroyal.org
