The Show Will Go On!

Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds Emergency Re-opening Appeal

Like most theatres in the UK, Theatre Royal was closed between March 2020 and May 2021 – as a result almost all of our income ceased during that time.  We received crucial public authority funding from Suffolk County Council and West Suffolk Councils, but this made up a small percentage of what we needed to survive. We were very fortunate to have ongoing and loyal support from our Patrons, Friends, Major Donors and Corporate Sponsors – without whom (even in normal times) we simply could not have survived. We received an Arts Council Emergency Grant to help us through this challenging time. In June 2020 we launched an emergency reopening appeal –  The Show Will Go On!  – in order to help us raise the vital funds we needed to re-open our theatre safely. The appeal target was set at £50,000 and we reached it within four weeks – we raised in excess of £70, 000. Although this waS not enough to cover the income we lost due to the closure, it helped us to re-open the doors of our beautiful playhouse and ensured Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds remained financially stable and robust.

The appeal was supported and endorsed by celebrity patrons such as Gyles Brandreth, Dame Judi Dench, Sir Derek Jacobi, Bill Nighy, Libby Purves, Robert Glenister and Armando Iannucci and we cannot thank them enough for this.

We were overwhelmed by the love and support we received from our customers, Friends, Patrons, business sponsors and community groups.
