Act Your Age is Theatre Royal Bury St Edmund’s theatre group for over 55’s who have a love of the theatre. Each term there are opportunities to work with a team of theatre professionals to experience the enjoyment of professionally-led workshops. This group allows you to be creative all while making lasting friendships.

Act Your Age is a regular group and we work on a new theme each term. We are always on the lookout for new members to come and join us.

Starting 3 May and running every Tuesday evening for 11 weeks, 10 sessions (No session on 31 May) from 1.30pm to 3pm at Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds.

No previous theatre experience is necessary.

Improvisation is one of the building blocks of drama. Last term we looked at some fundamentals:

How do you start? How do you move from basic ‘trust’ exercises to explorations of character, emotion, and atmosphere? How do you then build these into scenarios that are inherently true to life?

This term we will be expanding our knowledge more about the wonderful world of improv with a focus on:

Listening, Building scenes together, releasing imagination, re-incorporating ideas into an improvisation, interruptions, and incidents.

What can I expect?

  • Regardless of whether you are new to the group or have already been a member, you will be taken, step by step, session by session through a graded series of improvisation exercises. This term will consist of new exercises and if already a member, you will expand on existing knowledge and empower those who may be new to the group.
  • You will learn tools in order to have a full vocabulary of improvisational techniques and get rid of inhibition.
  • As the term progresses, you will develop greater confidence and creativity, this will give space for more observation and lead to analytical discussion.
  • PERFORMANCE OPPORTUNITY by the end of the term, you will have the opportunity to share back fully improvised scenes in front of a small audience using all the skills you have been building up!
